Assassination of president william mckinleyPresident William McKinley was assassinated in September of 1901 in Buffalo, New York, at the Pan-American Exposition. Who assassinated him? First of all, Leon Czolgosz was the assassin. President McKinley stood for hours so that his citizens could shake his hand. According to Eyewitness to History’s article “The Assassination of President William McKinley,” everyone thought McKinley’s handshake to be a gift from god (1). As a result, this was a routine, and everyone stood in line for hours. Czolgosz was next in line to shake the president’s hand, and his hand was wrapped in a handkerchief which hid a pistol (1). Due to this, McKinley’s bodyguards couldn’t see the pistol to protect the president. Next, the assassin stepped up to shake Mckinley's hand, and he dropped the handkerchief and shot the President at an arm-length’s range (1). As a result, an ambulance responded to the call to aid in the President’s rescue. Lastly, the president did not die immediately from the gunshot wound, he actually died of gangrene, which they say was a result of the bullet (1). Therefore, he didn’t die immediately, but it was still treated as an assassination. Soon thereafter, Theodore Roosevelt was the next President of the United States. After a trial, the assassin met the electric chair in New York and was sentenced to death for the assassination of the president. With this being said, McKinley’s assassination was an event that shocked the nation.
