Requirements to Become President
|
CitizenshipIf it is in the back of your mind that you might announce your candidacy for President, you might want to know about the citizenship requirement. Taking this into consideration, according to The Constitution Society’s article “Presidential Eligibility,” only a citizen of the United States or a natural born citizen can be President (Constitution Society 1). This requirement was also established by the Constitution. Accordingly, for John McCain the question was whether the Panama Canal Zone, where he was born, was U.S. soil (1). This questioned his eligibility for President. To solve this problem, a statute was later adopted naturalizing such persons at birth (1). Now, McCain could run for President. Before, you announce your candidacy for President make sure you’re a United States Citizen. This covers two of the requirements to be president, but there is one more.
